West Ridge Art Program

 Assessing Art

I start with a clear set of expectations we call TARGETS based on the Colorado State Standards for Visual Arts. Completed targets are posted on the "Target Wall" (right) for reference throughout the year.

I create a visual and written rubric for students to know what on target, above target and below target work looks like.

Throughout the project students can compare their work to the visual rubric that's always posted.

An example of a student's self portraits over time.

After we get our art ready for the wall, student self-assess according to the rubric that  they had from the beginning. I follow up assess their art as well.

Student Portfolios:

Each student has an Art Portfolio. Twice a year the students create a self portrait that goes into their portfolio. The students analyze their portraits and compare them from year to year. They write "Glows and Grows" based on what they see. They also write an art goal for the year. Portfolios are kept at school until the students "graduate" from West Ridge, at that time they can take their portfolio with them.
